Hello and welcome to the be yourself Booth. As apart of fresh Tech Day 2020, a bear very amazing day. And I want to thank you in advance for your time, thought and consideration as we go through the spoof, particularly pertaining to LGBT plus individuals in today's society. Okay, let's go ahead and jump straight into it. These are the agenda for today, so our MSAs, but just as booth hoped to achieve, or should we know, important statistics and considerations, resources for on and off campus support systems and the activity that we're. And so what is our message? Overall promote self acceptance and acceptance of others for who they are and provide information on risk and protective factors within the LGBTQ IA plus community. Why are we talking about this? Why RES, specifically talking about this community and this population? Well, it's important because everyone deserves to have their identity acknowledged, understood and embraced by offering and accepting and supportive environment for all people including LGBTQ IA plus individuals, we can help protect the well-being of high-risk populations. And overall, I challenge you to think about how you can be better ally, if you're not a part of the community yourself, herself. What should we now imports statistics and considerations. What is LGBT? Qe plus. So in case you haven't heard, this is the abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer intersects, asexual and others. Now, the plus does not mean that that's an important part of the community whatsoever. It is more just to keep the acronym short and concise so that everyone can say comfortably. I wanted to put in that little disclaimer. So specifically, LGBTQ plus individuals are at greater risk for suicide, depression, bullying, discrimination, harassment, and family rejection. Whether it be affiliated to their gender identity, their sexual orientation, their coming-out process. It has been statistically proven that they are at greater risk because of the current societal perspective. And unfortunately not everyone his eyes accepting of this community. And a specific statistic that really wanted to highlight was 45% of transgender 18-24 year olds have attempted suicide. And obviously that is way too hybrid percentage. And I think that's especially important. That going into Today, we think about our transgender community members and how we can help lift their voices and make sure that our LGBT plus community is getting the resources that they need. So what are some other background information that we should now? Lgbtq youth are four times more likely and questioning youth are three times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers. Comparatively, LGBT youth who come from highly rejecting families are more than eight times as likely to attempt suicide as our LGBTQ IA plus peers who reported no or low levels of family rejection. Providing support and safe spaces can help build protective factors for LGBTQ. A Huston's at-risk will pack. So let's jump into Survey sources as good stuff. Okay, so these are some on-campus resources. I thought it was especially important to highlight these for our current on campus or looking to come onto campus students is obviously the counseling center. We have the UDL blind, which is the hotline all across campus, even call a 24-7. And then there's the physical counseling center. And something that not a lot of students domes that you can actually go to the counseling center and requests to speak with someone who specializes in a marginalized populations such as LGBTQ students. There's also lavender programming for it, which is the RCMP LGBT Qe plus students and allies to do a ton of great soon programming events like the lavender welcome celebration, the Lochner graduation ceremony, Second Chance prom. They do the drag show. They do a time that really supports LGBT students. There's also establishes the RSA for LGBTQ, a clustering specifically in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Because we recognize that being queer in a stem field is a bit of a different experience and we want to in additional outlet for those students as well. There's also the pad Caucus, which is the stack with faculty organization for professionals at UD who identify in the community. And then there are two different housing opportunities. There's the gender and sexuality LLC, which is a housing opportunity for students looking to learn more about gender and sexuality and all gender housing, which speaks to how UT is committed to having a housing opportunity for every student that matches their gender identity. Okay, it's now some off-campus resources, or know me, Is this an exhaustive list whatsoever? There's two local international. I thought that was really important to have that mix as well. So there's the United Way of pride Council, which is a organization dedicated to community resources including corporate education, health, government, and religious organizations to include improved the lives of LGBT Qe plus adults. There's also the PFLA G we have a local chapter in Wilmington, Delaware, which is the parents and friends of lesbians and gays. They support the health and well-being of LGBT persons, their families and friends to help them cope with an adverse society, to enlightenment, ill informed public to end discrimination and to secure equal rights. And then there are two national organizations as well on the screen, the Human Rights Campaign, which is the largest LGBT Qe plus civil rights organization. They talk a lot about envisioning a world where LGBTQ plus people are insured their basic rights and can be open, honest, safe at home, at work, and in the community. And then there's also the National Center for Transgender or quality, which is the nation's leading social justice advocacy organization winning life-changing awards for change into people. They work at the local, state, and federal level to advanced transgender equality. And there is another organization that's very near and dear to my heart that I specifically wanted to talk about, which is the Trevor Project. So 1998, the Trevor Project is the leading international organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT Qe plus young people under the age of 25. Typically. The website is the Trevor Project.org. And this has fantastic organization that has really dedicated themselves to decreasing the rate of suicide amongst LGBTQ IA plus individuals. I volunteered with this organization. I really think that they have a fantastic message. Specifically when it comes to the trigger lifeline, you can call tax or online message a counselor any day, anytime 247, no matter what's going on in the world, you will have a counselor to talk with and they will support you no matter what, you're going through. A ton of resources from educational materials, volunteering opportunities, and a mailing list. And typically on their website they'll have upcoming events or different milestones that had been made on a national and global level through social media is also up on the screen. I highly recommend checking out the Trevor Project. They're a fantastic organization and is definitely a weed in the field to supporting LGBT Qe plus students already. So let's wrap it up. I have an activity for everyone to complete, to really tie everything together. And what I came up with was coming out letters of support. So I encourage all of you to write an encouraging letter to someone who has recently or is considering coming out. Your words of support can mean the world to them. As we discussed earlier, LGBT PA students that come from rejecting families are eight times as likely compared to their peers to attempt to commit suicide. And you never know what your words of affirmation could really do for somebody. It can be a short or as long as you want. I think that it's really important to provide support, especially in today's climate. You never know what someone might be going through. Thank you so so much for your time, your thoughts and consideration. I really appreciate you taking the time to listen to what I had to say today and please go ahead and submit your coming out letter once you have a completed and enjoy the rest of the boast that we are offering today. Refresh, check day, have a fantastic time.
