Hello. My name is Scott Nelson. I'm a master machinist in the Student machine shop and the College of Engineering at the University of Delaware. We're going to talk about the uses and safety items associated with the miter saw. It can use the saw to cut wood, plastics, and other soft materials. We're going to discuss some of the features and parts of this miter saw right now it's locked in the down position and see it's down like this. There's unlock lever right here that you pull back and now it's in the cutting position up here. This is the blade of the saw. This is what's going to do the cutting for you. It has a blade guard on it, and we also have a fence back here to hold your material against to make sure you can cut it nice and square and hold it securely when you're going to make a cut and pulled the trigger up here. This is your on-off switch. And just lower that down into your material. And if your material is wide, some miter saws, this particular one does have it will move in this direction so you can cut wider materials. We also have a dust collection bag back here that can also be hooked up to a shop back or a vacuum system. You do want to make sure that you have a way to get rid of the sawdust, because this creates quite a bit. Ok. Some of these miter saws have some attachments on it that will help you to line up your blade exactly where you want to cut on. Your piece would have drawn a line on here. You can see this one has a, an LED light on there, so you can lower it down and you can see how the shadow, the blade shows exactly where it's going to cut. I'm going to show you how to put the material in here and also how to secure it. Generally, if it's possible to clamp something in here, clamp it rather than holding it with your hand. These things can generate quite a bit of force if they get jammed up something like this, you could clamp this way, especially if you're going to be standing it up, you'd want to clamp it to the back fence like this with two clamps. Make sure that's held in place nice and tight. That way you have a free hand to catch things if you have any problems with it. Saw can also cut up to 12 inch wide boards because of the sliding feature here. Must use extreme caution with this thing. It's a powerful machine. It creates a lot of noise, a lot of dust, and always be aware of the spinning blade here. It's very sharp. Okay, we're going to cut a piece off of the end of this. So first thing you want to do is mark it with a ruler square. Then using your square, make a nice pencil line all the way across it. So we're going to line the blade up with this side of the blade against that side of the line. So we get the full length out of that, bring that down without it turning, turned on and move it until it's right at the line that you want to cut right there. Okay. So now make sure you have all your PPE on, safety glasses, long pants, anything loose tied back, pulled the trigger on saw.'s, don't move your hands and tell the blade is completely stopped. And you can see we cut right along the line I made. So we have a nice dimensional piece. The, anytime you're using this type of saw, you need to make sure that your hands are as far away from the blade as possible. Put something in here like this. You want to hold it down with this left hand. Make sure you push it against this fence that way. As you bring it down, your hands are clear of the blade, and this is called a miter saw because you can adjust the angle of the cut in two different directions. You can pull this over this. If you want to cut a 45-degree angle on something, then you can also move this part to this side or that side. So you can make two pieces of wood fit together on the proper angle. And we're gonna set this off for a compound cut. What that means is we're going to be on a 45-degree angle this way and a 15 degree angle this way. These type of cuts are used a lot in roof construction, building construction, that sort of thing. First thing you have to do is loosen this up and then we roll that over to where it says 15 degrees and tighten that backup just like that. And now we're going to talk about cutting a mitre, which is going to be an angled cut on top of this piece of wood here. First, we want to measure how far back we want that to be, which will be six inches. Make a line there, and we can move the square up that has a 45-degree head on it. So it can get a nice 45-degree angle cut right across like that. Have to move the sawtooth 45-degree angle first. So I'm going to pull the trigger up and move that over till it reads 45 degrees like that. >> You can see we're in a little different position now, S. So now we have a 45-degree cut on each side, which means we can hook these together on a 90 degree angle. That's called a miter cut. We're going to mark this so we can cut 12 inches off of the end of this piece. Here is a tape, major market at 12 inches and we'll bring it up. >> You want to cut on the opposite side of the line this time because we want to keep the 12 inch long piece like that, hold it in place. S longer pieces of material need to be supported on the outside. And you can either use a bench or a work support such as this, or you can have somebody hold that for you to make sure that that's not going to drop down after you cut it s This saw is designed to cut pieces of wood that are larger than six inches long and also fairly wide. You wouldn't want to try to cut a short piece like this. Your hands are way too close to the blade, and that peace could easily kick your hand into the blade and hurt you. Also, small pieces like this could easily kick back at you, hit? Yeah, stuff like this. You want to cut with a hand saw.
