This video demonstrates the wet object recovery exercise presented to first-year art conservation students in the Winterthur University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. The exercise is normally performed in the labs at Winterthur Museum. The goal is to have students research how different materials respond to water and how best to recover from a water event. Besides the philosophical approach, the practicality of the exercise gives the students a visual and tactile sense for how different materials respond when wet. The pandemic sent us home, so this video shows how we modified the exercise for the virtual classroom. Students used their knowledge of materials to advise wet object recovery from a remote location. The a cell phone camera was placed over a bin filled with objects and water, while a laptop camera was pointed at the recovery or drying area.
