In 1985, a North Carolina jury convicted Darryl Hunt, a Black 19-year old, of raping and murdering a white woman - a crime he did not commit. After two trials and spending nearly two decades in prison, Hunt was exonerated in 2004 after DNA evidence led police to the real killer. He spent the rest of his life educating the public about flaws in the criminal legal system, advocating for the wrongfully convicted and providing resources for those who were rebuilding their lives after being incarcerated.
UD students created a student-led mock trial based on Hunt’s story. Students contributed to the script, directed, worked back-stage and acted in the production.
The event was supported by the Department of Women and Gender Studies, and a grant from the Mellon Foundation’s Affirming Multivocal Humanities program.
This performance was recorded April 11, 2024.
