Abstract: Substantial investments are underway to restore declining salmon populations along the U.S. West Coast, yet little is known about the returns to these outlays. In this talk I will explore two case studies evaluating the efficiency of current investments in salmon recovery. The first case study focuses on the performance of contemporary heuristic approaches to restoring river connectivity and the potential gains from alternative strategies. The second case study investigates whether ongoing efforts to reform the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) will deliver intended benefits for salmon populations.
