Welcome to the Lerner College of Business and Economics. My name is Dr. Jack Baroudi and I am the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Programs at Lerner College. Joining me is my colleague, Jill Pante, our director of Lerner career services. >> Hi everyone. >> First what I'm going to do is say, Congratulations on your acceptance to the Lerner College of Business and Economics. Great job. What I want to do today is share with you some information about our programs so you can decide if we're the right school to help you succeed and achieve your goals. After my short presentation, I will turn it over to Jill Pante, who will talk with you about our career services and programs that we offer within the college. First, a little background on the college. We are the second largest college at the University, and we are the only college with both our own academic advising and career services offices. We are accredited and both business and accounting by the AACSB, which is the gold standard of business school accreditation. And only a small percentage of accredited business schools have achieved this dual recognition of quality. We are large enough to provide a diversity of experiences with many majors, minors, internships, and extra curricular activities. >> But we're small enough to be personal and caring. >> You will get to know your advisors and instructors very well. Most of our classes are capped between 35 to 55 students. Every June, we host New Student Orientation for our incoming students to help you prepare for your first semester at UD. During the orientation, you'll have the opportunity to meet with your advisor to select your classes with other students and learn about student organizations. And your parents will have a chance to learn about our college and the services we offer. You will leave orientation knowing your schedule, and being enrolled in your classes for the fall. We have professional advisors who work one-on-one with our students, monitoring and helping to write guidance and interventions when needed, to help our students stay on track and graduate in four years. Well over 80% of our students graduate in four years, which is well above the national average. As a student, you will get to know your advisor very well. And our advising, we're very proud to say, is award winning. And we serve as a model for other colleges and programs. We also offer are UDream program, which provides academic support services to our undergraduate students through academic coaching and peer mentoring. And you also will have access to individual, free individual tutoring sessions as needed. We have 16 majors, 16 minors and more than 40% of our students have double majors. It's also possible to have a major in another college. All of our students will take the basics of business course in their first year. To learn about the different areas of business. This way you have a chance to start deciding what major you may want to pursue if you haven't already chosen one. We have many guest speakers in our classrooms that include prominent business leaders and University of Delaware alumni. We also host several leadership speaker series where you will have opportunities to meet senior industry leaders. Pictured is Jonathan Tisch with his back to us, who is CEO of Loews Corporation and runs Loews hotels. This all helps to contribute to 96% of our students rating their Lerner college experiences being excellent or good. Here are a few photos of some of our students in action. In the upper left-hand corner is the JP Morgan Chase Innovation Center, which is on the first floor of Purnell Hall, where they employ over 60 students at UD in professional roles largely in technology. They also pay at the market rate, which leaves many of the faculty very envious of our students. Below is our chef, working with students, helping them learn to provide a fine dining experience at our Vita Nova restaurant. To the upper right we have Mark Serva who was working on data analytic projects with two of his students. And below we have three of our students who are in the Geltzeiler trading center named after our alumnus, Michael Geltzeiler, who is the retired CEO of the New York Stock Exchange. Michael is also one of our mentors in the Lerner executive mentoring program, which Jill will highlight later. We also offer a number of business competitions, such as freshmen pitch competition, the hen hatch, And we have many opportunities to be involved in student organizations. Within Lerner college itself, we have over 30 different student organizations to help you be connected to other students and faculty. Study abroad was born at UD back in the 1920s. We now have many options for studying, whether it's a semester or a year abroad. But our most popular and doable options are our winter term and summer term study abroad programs. This allows you to travel and learn about business in different cultures without interrupting your fall and spring semesters. It's easy to do this and still complete in four years. I am pleased to announce a new six-story, 100,000- square foot building, which will mark the first sizable presence of Lerner college on the STAR campus. And this is scheduled for opening in 2021. Labs and centers associated with both UD's College of Engineering and Lerner college will open in this new facility. These spaces will link strengths and resources from both colleges on topics such as financial service analytics, cybersecurity, human machine learning, and data analytics. And as the needs of business and society change, we want to be sure that we're on the cutting edge helping to solve these critical problems. There are five things I want to leave you with before I turn you over to Jill. And that's what we call UD Lerner advantage - 1) UD is a great place to be an undergraduate. We have 17,000 undergraduates, about 4,000 graduate students. The primary focus is on our undergraduates at UD, which includes student clubs, social events, student life, sporting events, and so on. I taught at NYU, a very fine business school, but there the primary focus was on graduate students and graduate programs. 2) Lerner has high-quality programs and faculty. We are AACSB accredited and are highly ranked in the top 100, which when you realize there's over 2,000 business schools in the United States is a pretty impressive number. Third, Lerner is large enough to offer you many choices of majors, minors, and experiential learning opportunities. but 4) it's also small enough to be a very personal place with small classes, advising, tutoring, and Career Services to make sure that you are successful. And 5) Newark is a small college town, close to major urban hubs of Wilmington, Philly, New York, and DC. So you get the best of both worlds. So now let me turn it over to Jill. >> Thanks, Jack. Hi everyone. My name is Jill Pante. I am Director of the Lerner Career Services Center. Lerner is the only college that has its own Career Services Center. And our team is an expert in all of these different career programs which we offer throughout the year. So we help students from the minute they walk in our doors around resume writing, LinkedIn networking, interview skills, job searching, and I think most importantly, especially for our first-year students about choosing a major. So we know a lot of students come in as business undeclared, and we have different assessments that we can offer students and then also just that one-on-one coaching to really kinda figure all of that out. Not only just what your major is, but how that's going to translate into a career. Some of our unique programs that I want to talk about. Jack had mentioned our executive mentoring program. So our executive mentoring program is very unique. We pair our students one-on-one with an executive that's out there in the business world. They, all of our mentors have at least ten or more years of progressive work experience. You can see that some of our mentors come from, you know, very well known, known companies such as JP Morgan, EY, PWC, Tiffany and Company, NBC Sports, Goldman- Sachs, Microsoft, and all of these mentors are typically on the C-suite level partnership track, managing director or vice president. And what I think is so unique about this program is that our mentors really want to help our students. So trying to figure out what they want to do with their career, looking for jobs and internships All of our mentors are in a position to open doors for students. So they, they're really high up in their company and they have that ability to really influence a student's career. Another unique program that I'd love to talk about is our road to Wall Street. We were reached out to by a number of different alumni that work up in New York in the financial sector. And they wanted to be able to connect their opportunities and their organizations with our students, especially through their summer internship program, which is a great way to get the foot in the door into a company. And so we created this program to kind of bridge that gap with our students to get up there to New York City. So through this program, students receive mentoring, they receive career coaching, technical training. We go up to New York City. We do company visits and meet with the New York City Dean's Council. We also do different alumni networking up in New York, as well as virtual. And we have a lot of referrals for our students. So all of those alumni that want to help and hire our students, we're connecting students and the road to Wall Street, right with those opportunities with our alumni. Another great program that we just developed over the past year is the Lerner Edge. We have an incredible advisory and Alumni Board here in Lerner. And they do a fantastic job of advising our dean about different things within the college. But the advisory board came to me about a year ago and said, we want to do more and we want to do something specific with students to help them gain an edge in their job and internship process. So we created this edge program where we have advisory and alumni board members. So they all come with 15-20 years of experience and they sit down with our students two to three times a semester and they help them when they work in small groups. And they helped them with their resume and also do mock interviews so that they can really improve their interview skills. So this has been a home run with our students who really appreciate the feedback that they're getting from the industry experts. What is Handshake? If you've been to other universities than you know, that Handshake is a great events, jobs, and internship posting board. We host over 200 events throughout the year and we post all of those In Handshake. The students have easy access to find out what's going on, on and off campus. We also researched last year alone and found that our students had access to over 17,000 full-time jobs specifically related to business, over 6,000 internships specifically related to business. And of those internships, over 76% were paid. So we're not only connecting opportunity, we're connecting paid opportunity to our students. And lastly, let's talk about the numbers. Our students, they get jobs. 94% of students are employed or are pursuing further education within six months of graduation, our average starting salary is just a little below 55,000 with an average bonus of a little over $5,000. I wanted to talk a little bit about the numbers on the left hand side there. Jack already went over 96% of students rated their experience within the Lerner college, within the Lerner College as excellent or good. Over half of those students accepted a job offer for where they interned. And almost half of those students got multiple job offers. So our students are, while it might be a stressful time, it's a fantastic time for them to really make the best decisions for their career. And just another thing to point out, our knowledge rate is 92% for our different classes. So when you think about the national average or, or what should be a good knowledge rate is about 60%. For the national average, we're at over 90%. Which means that we have received surveys, we've spoken to, we've done the research, we know where our students are going. So these numbers that I'm presenting you with are accurate, reliable, and valid. So our students really are successful and we have the data to back that up. So want to thank you so much for listening to the career side and I'll throw it back over to Jack to kinda wrap us out. >> So thank you, Jill. And I want to thank all of you for watching today and we're looking forward to seeing you at New Student Orientation. One of my concerns is that you may have many questions that you haven't had a chance to ask or get answered. So what I want to do is give you my email, which is baroudi@udel.edu. And if you send me an email, it can be a question for me or for Jill or a question that you just don't know how to get answered. And I will do my best to make sure that I either answer that question or refer you to the appropriate person who can answer your question. So again, thank you for joining us. >> Take care. >> We appreciate your time, so thank you very much. >> Okay. How is that? >> We stop this now?
