Abstract: Most life on Earth is concentrated in the tropics, but warm-blooded marine predators break this rule. In this talk I show that this pattern reflects a general tradeoff between warm- and cold-blooded vertebrates that extends across sea and land, driven by metabolic differences that intensify in the cold. I test this idea with laboratory predation experiments and predict how continued warming will reshape vertebrate communities.
