Human Papillomavirus (HPV) belongs to the genus Alphapapillomavirus which is responsible for HPV infections. More than one hundred types of HPV types have been identified, and approximately sixty-seven of these types infect the genital tract. HPV types are classified into low-risk HPV and high- risk HPV types. The Low-risk HPV types: 6, 11,13, 40, 42, 43,44, 54, 61, 62, 72, 81, 83, 84, 90, 91 are associated with anogenital warts and benign epithelial lesions. While high -risk HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 58, 59, 67, 68, 70, 73 can cause cancer like cervical, penile, throat, tongue, tonsils, and anus cancer. HPV type prevalence and distribution have shown variation in geographical location and cytohistological findings. The limitation is that most of the HPV types prevalence studies are evaluated on women with abnormal cervical cytology. In Brazil, the burden of cervical HPV infections is on the rise for the 82 million women, ages 15 years and older, who are at risk of developing cervical cancer. To reduce this burden of cervical cancer and other HPV associated cancers, it is essential to predict the vaccination efficacy on non-vaccine types.
