Welcome to the Lerner College of Business and Economics, New Student Orientation. Brains Dr. Jennifer grievance, I'm the Senior Assistant Dean for global programs and partnerships in the Lerner College, and also an Associate Professor of Business Administration. But most important for all of you watching this video, I am the academic advisor of Master of Science in International Business Program. As you all know, I've worked with you from the time you applied to the program through your acceptance. Feel subtler. Picking classes, answering questions, getting ready for fall semester. And now all semester is finally here. So that's very exciting. And I'm here to just give you some information or if we allow this you've already heard before, but just forget to put it all in one place. Gets you ready to have a successful start to your false in a spherical master's degree program. To welcome, I want to get started here. I asked all of you to put together a self introduction video. I've already seen a number of them and they are amazing. I'm so glad I gave you that assignment. For me. A lot of fun. You get to see each other's and get to know each other in our, in this virtual environment. And so we're doing the best we can to connect with one another in a second. Let me go a long way for that. So I gave myself the same assignments, self-introduction video coming up. And then we'll get into the nuts and bolts of the presentation. Alright, so there you go. There is myself introduction video. Now you know a little bit more about me. And I look forward to learning a lot more about all of you as well. Okay. So now on to the nuts and bolts of the MS international business program. And what we're going to cover today is going to be connecting with your academic advisor. That's me. Understand MSI be core curriculum, one of the classes that you must take and selecting your electives. So very simple, straightforward information never going over today. Or how do you contact your academic advisor? How do you contact me? So just need to point out that at this time I not permitted to work from my office on campus, unfortunately, so I will continue working remotely from home. Not to fear, still very accessible to you. And so I need to do you have a quick question? Send me an email as you have been doing all along. So just keep doing that. And I will get back to us and it's possible for more involved questions or issues. I do suggest you schedule assume appointment. To do that. You're just going to email me with your availability and then I will send a reply with the date and time obviously, and then I'll send us email invitation. So he's in meetings. I feel like they don't work and out of a well known ousted as meeting in person in my office, but they both definitely due for the time being gives away normal office hours are going to be 29123135, something like that. Basically from nine to five every day Monday through Friday for students and other time zones. I know I've got a few out there. I can meet earlier or later in the day if that makes it easier for you unless you don't want you getting up and know that I like to have a meeting with me. So we will find a time to connect to that works for both of us. Alright, so that's how to get a hold of me. Just keep doing what you've been doing basically. So let's talk about required core classes where your degree. So there are six core classes as you probably already know. And so they are listed here. One thing to know, especially for those of you who started the program this summer, has been achieved in the numbering system. What a great time to make a big change. So instead of being 800 levels there now, but everything else is exactly the same as it was before. So don't be thrown off by that. Somebody's students taking classes this summer who took UAV 811? It is the same as 611. Yes, it just replace the eight with the six and that is our new course numbering system. Alright, so yeah, here is the set of courses that you will all take. 18 credits comprising the core or the MS IB program that introduces you to global business at the most macro of levels. And then I'll be down to the most micro levels though. Globalization and business, looking at the environment of international business, all the way down to the feature of globalization and u. So where do you fit in this whole globalizing world? What are you going to occupy and everything in between? So looking at the ethics of business, international marketing, how to read across borders and know what is your cultural IQ managing the global enterprise. How do you manage enterprises across boundaries? So you're going to learn about all these different things acquire on these different skills. And that will be again, the essence of the degree. And then you will choose elective courses to compliment that. Before we get to that though, in terms of when do you want to graduate? And I slip into a number of you about that. So then the question is, when are these different core courses available? How do you schedule them to ensure that you graduate when you want to you? The core courses are typically available in the fall and the spring. So all six of these classes will appear in the fall semester and they will appear in the spring semester. Normally, we alternate being online and on campus, obviously, Nepal, everything is online. In the spring, hopefully, we will have a mix of online and on-campus core classes. Alright, the fall and spring, they are available. And in terms of core classes available and the obsessions, meaning winter session or summer session. Normally it's only be waiting 611 that's available in a winter session. One, we don't have any core courses available on the summer. Sometimes you're 8611 and will be available on the summer. Again, nothing's within normal lately. But this is typically what the schedule looks like. So yeah. Again, it's like, you know, when you want to graduate and they can help us schedule these classes accordingly. Those of you who have told me I really want to graduate 10x 2021 to the end of this academic here. I caution you not to take you 8611 in the fall and that is available in the winter. In order to graduate by the end of this academic year, you need to be taking four classes now, 12 credits to classes in the winter, six credits, and then more classes in the spring, 12 credits, exception. Of course, those of you who started in the summer at N40 have one class completed. Obviously will change things a little bit. Alright, so there's your core classes, everybody take, so six classes, 18 credits. And then for the fun part, we get to choose swamp credits of electives. And that is really any class that you want to take. So I ask you with your introductory video to think about what you want to get out of this program. It's a good question to ask when you're starting something new, you know, why are you doing this? What do you want to get out of that? Where do you want to be at the end is 30 credits and, you know, nine months or a year and a half, whatever it takes. So hopefully you've given that a lot of thought and continue to think about that because this question, your answer to this question will continue to evolve. So what do you want to get out of this program? Well, now all education is self-discovery. Will learn things about yourself. And you will learn whether you like it or not. It's, this experience is going to change. You get new ideas, perspectives, points of view, ways of thinking about things, et cetera. So definitely you will be getting something out of this program that is self-discovery. And perhaps that's where it will stop for you. Maybe that's where you are right now on your journey. It's just kind of a discovery and looking for inspiration kind of moat, perfectly logical and acceptable goal for what you want to get out of this program and you will discover and be inspired. So maybe you're trying to find your place in the world. No, aren't we all find our places in the world? 2020 hits. But an interesting here is given us a lot to think about and it's given us time to think about some of those things. So I hope you've taken advantage of, you know, that what if a silver lining to all this chaos and, and sadness. And really thought about, okay, well, what do I want my life to be? Where do I want to fit in this world? What do I want my contribution to be? And maybe doing this graduate program is part of you. Your goal of trying to find your place in the world. And certainly the courses will help you do that. Alright, maybe you're looking for more specific things. Maybe some leadership experience, leadership knowledge. We have some great courses that deal with management and leadership. Maybe you wanted to start a business, grow your business. Start a social enterprise or a social enterprise also impact the venture development center and courses in entrepreneurship and new venture development and creation. And some really, really talented, wonderful entrepreneurs and faculty numbers in that area you can take advantage of. Maybe you're interested in a particular industry. I know a couple of you have mentioned bats and you want to go into finance or health care, hospitality, sports management. We have a depth expertise that all of those areas, Yeah. So I encourage you to to seek out some classes along those lines if that's the direction you want to go. Still, others of you are going to be looking to get particular skill sets developed, particular skill sets that are in demand in the marketplace right now. Anything with the word analytics associated with it, business analytics, marketing analytics is going to be a very valuable today. And of course, information technology continues to be an incredibly valuable skill set. So any or all of those are good things to want to get out of this program. Just, I would ask you to please give some again, give a lot of thought to what you want. That's 12 credits to be very thoughtful and selecting reluctance, remembering that you don't have to stick to that pre-approved list of electives aesthetic, and give you an idea of what's available. I can improve other courses for that, the lattice. Alright, so let's move along. So next is MSI community. So you are the MSI geek. He said, I want to talk about you for just a second, sort of an introduction to your introduction videos that will be coming soon. So yes, in those videos you'll find out more about who you are unless you found out from my video more about me. Yeah, my my headshot and my title. Someone I've learned more about all of you. For now. We'll just settle for knowing the numbers. And we've got six new students who began this summer. So 6M you out there already got started in the program this summer. Some Welcome to you. You've got one class on your belt and off you go and the ball starting was folly of 12 new students. And so welcome to all of you. Says, I'm really excited about this class this year and no, I don't say that every year. This really is, I think the best incoming fast MSRP students that I am sitting in Canvas. This program since its inception. So yeah, super excited for all of you to, to be on board. Joining us. This year will be poor students are continuing from last year more than a graduate at the end of the fall semester. And we also have some students that are in our online program was for all online in the fall, but we do have an online MS IB program. And we have eight students currently enrolled in that. My book would probably pick up a keyboard for fall semester begins. Alright, so that's our community by the numbers. And that's a good place to end. I look forward to connecting with you, continuing to work with you and get to know you and help you achieve your goals. Because ultimately that's what I'm passionate about and I'm passionate about students and learning and helping people to find their way and achieve their goals. Nothing makes me happier than being able to be a part of that process. So again, welcome and enjoy the start of your all semester and let me know how I can help you.
