Welcome to the University of Delaware's video series on financing a university education. This video will focus on the different types of scholarships and grants our Delaware residents can receive for the academic year 2020-2021. We will begin with university merit scholarship awarding. As you can see on the screen, there are a variety of different factors that the university has used to determine which admitted students are awarded these funds, and that it is a very competitive process. We would also like to note that these funds are renewable and the requirements for receiving them each year are listed on your screen as well. All grant and scholarship aid can be seen in the top right corner of your financial aid award notice as shown by the arrow. The university may also process two types of federal grants. The Pell Grant and the supplemental educational opportunity grants, or SEOG. Eligibility for all federal funding is determined by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The result of the FAFSA, your expected family contribution, or EFC, will determine your eligibility for a Pell Grant. While still dependent on financial need, the SEOG award is determined by the availability of funding granted to the university. Maximum amounts for each award and other requirements including those for renewability, are on the left side of your screen. If eligible, federal funding is also listed at the top right corner of your financial aid award notice, as shown by the arrows. Our in-state residents may also benefit from our commitment to Delawareans program. The Commitment Program allows the University, in coordination with the state, to fund the documented need of our students as shown by the FAFSA provided the student covers 25% of the cost with their federal student loan eligibility or other resources. The grant amount is determined by removing the EFC from the university cost of tuition, fees, standard room and board, and a small book allowance. Students are not required to participate in the federal loan program and can decline that portion of their award. And students must file the FAFSA each year to determine their eligibility. Commitment to Delawareans funding, much like any grant and scholarship, will also be listed on the students financial aid award notice in the top right corner as displayed by the arrow. As a reminder, in order to qualify for funding to offset housing, the student must reside in a university operated facility. As you can see from the example financial aid award notice, we will total all grants and scholarships for you as well as your direct cost, tuition fees, room and board, and then subtract the total grand and scholarship aid to arrive at your total net direct cost as highlighted by the arrow on your screen. >> This number represents the real out-of-pocket cost for your education next year. >> This is the number that you should use when comparing the financial aid offers you've received. We have also provided for you some links to helpful online resources as you reach your final decision.
