Hi. 0 0 0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00. 0 0 0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00. Hi. Hi. A, uh, uh, uh, uh, 0, 0, 0, a. Good. Right. I don't see a light here. Do you need one hundred? One hundred? Yeah. I have a pair of reading glasses. Okay. You're good. Yeah. I know what you're saying. Good afternoon, everyone. Good afternoon. Would you please stand for the national anthem, which will be sung by Sophia the veil, a master's graduate in voice performance from our own school of music. He can see the eight watts, so prey. That's me who brought us. Who asked me. That was a little bit. That's bang gold. Or though. I am now. Good afternoon and welcome to the 2020 to doctoral hooting and graduate college convocation ceremony. I am Wu Rossi. I'm the Dean of the Graduate College and a Professor of Mathematical Sciences. As the dean, I have the privilege of representing the faculty and administration in welcoming you today. Before we begin our celebration, I asked for a moment of silence for the 22 souls lost to gun violence this week. Thank you. This afternoon. We're going to celebrate the achievements of all those who've received doctoral degrees between fall of 2021 And this summer 2020 to the Graduate College is three years young. And for the first time ever. This ceremony will serve as a convocation for the first cohort of students to earn a master's degree from the Graduate College itself. It's my pleasure to introduce the platform party to you. And as your name is called, please stand. Dennis a sourness, the 28th president of the University of Delaware. Robin Morgan, Provost of the University of Delaware. Charlie Reardon, vice president for research, scholarship and innovation. Matthew kids are Vic, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. Mary Martin, Associate Dean of the Graduate College. Calvin Keeler, Interim Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Maria Arista gate, a dean of the Josef are Biden Junior School of Public Policy and Administration. John progress go Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Bruce Weber, Dean of the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics. Fabrice Varun, Interim Dean of the College of Earth, ocean, and environments. Gary Henry, Dean of the College of Education and Human Development. Joe Higginson, Associate Dean for the College of Engineering. Kathleen met, Dean of the College of Health Sciences. And Richard Braun, Founding Director of the Masters in data science program and professor of mathematics. I would also like to thank Steve take of the resident ensemble players for being our professional reader this afternoon. Now graduates. Oh sorry. Now graduates. There is no higher degree offered than the doctoral degree, not here or anywhere. There are a few types of doctoral degrees. For example, to earn a PhD, you need to satisfy a panel of experts in your field. You have advanced the knowledge and discovery beyond what is currently known. Many of you worked for 56 or even seven years or longer to do the work which earns you the privilege of being called doctor. It's hard to do that without having people who know you and are always there to cheer for you. I know we have many family and friends of the graduates who are here today. Can I ask that you stand up for a moment and be recognized? Now, we're holding we're holding the ceremony during an extraordinary times. Whether it is a changing climate, public health crises, social injustice, stressed security, food and energy resources were facing problems that are increasingly interconnected and complex. And as we know from the tragedy this week, these problems are very hard to understand and even more difficult to explain to other people. These challenges require new ideas, new discoveries, and new ways to work and live together differently. We do need people like you, your special knowledge and expertise. Not only to create solutions, but to be fully engaged participants and leaders in society. You're a very special group of people. One of you has successfully identified a new biochemical pathway that may lead to a treatment for all timers. One of you has developed a new algorithm that allows deep learning methods to extrapolate more easily to new data sets. One of you discovered how the creation of tactile relief maps for blind people in the 19th century influenced geography throughout the world, long before the notion of universal design came into commonplace. And we see that all around us today. Those of you who are reading doctoral degrees today have been working on the greatest challenges of our time. Some of you came straight out of college. Some of you've been in the workforce for many years and then came back. There are three of you who are only 25 years old, right? One of you is 66. As a group, you bring to our humble campus the experience. The experiences of 31 different nations from Bangladesh to Venezuela, from every inhabited continent on the planet. And I believe, I believe the graduate today who came the farthest is from Singapore, which is over 9 thousand miles away along the surface of the planet. And he came here to a tiny state where there's a medium-sized university that is known throughout the world and respected throughout the world for our knowledge, our expertise, and our ability to produce outstanding scholars, scientists, and thought leaders like you. So before we move ahead, I would like to recognize a few of our special graduates. I ask that all military veterans, regardless of nationality stand to be recognized for their service to us. I would also like to recognize our Dissertation Award winners. As your names are called, I asked you to please stand and remain standing. The Alfred P. Coburn Prize is awarded to Li Xia from chemical engineering. The ONP ciphered Prize is awarded to Kristin nasa from art history. But stay standing, stay standing agreement. Okay. The George Herbert rice and Prize is awarded to Dan see rios contrasts from criminology. The Theodore Wolf Prize is awarded to budge Pi, who'd cars from physics. And the Dan Rich Prize is awarded to Virginia Sawyer Morris from human development and family studies. Finally, the interdisciplinary research Prize is awarded to juniper lake from bioinformatics and data science. You may be seated, but I ask that you join me back at the podium at the end at the end of the ceremony for a photograph. It is my pleasure and privilege to announce the winner of our outstanding doctoral graduate advising and mentoring award for this year. Now to be nominated for this distinction, it's expected that you selflessly dedicate yourself to your students and their professional and personal development. It's expected that you strike the proper balance between being supportive and being critical. If you do all this and more, you might get nominated. And so let alone It's a, it's a very challenging pool to swim in. And so it is my great pleasure to recognize Professor Joshua side for the award this year. Those who nominated him, right about his student-centered approach. He didn't recruit students to his lab. Instead, he engaged with all of them to find the best lab that would fit their interests. Students and colleagues describe him as an approachable, carrying and community focused. One student who nominated him an IV. It wasn't even one of his advisees, but took the time to do it because he felt that singular impact he had on his career. Another explained, Joshua had taught them that credit is infinitely divisible and infinitely non diluted will. So think about that for a minute. All right. Okay. So this is their opportunity to show Joshua that they learned well from him and to bestow upon him the credit that he truly, truly deserves. And now it is my great pleasure. Greatest pleasure to introduce Provost Robin Morgan. Thank you, Lou. And good afternoon, everyone. It's my great honor and privilege to welcome all of you here to the 2020 to doctoral hooting ceremony. And the Graduate College convocation. Today marks a very special commemoration in the lives of our graduates. As five of them received their masters, Master's degrees, and 230 of them. Receive doctoral hoods. And this day under any circumstances, is a reason to celebrate. It recognizes decisions made, years and years of sacrifice and devotion to complete commitment and hard work in the context of what we have endured during the global pandemic over the past two years. The celebration is even sweeter. As your provost, I have lived this unexpected and challenging time with you. You D's leadership work to ensure the health and safety of our campus community while remaining committed to our academic mission and your ability to progress in your programs. I learned of the struggles that many of you faced, the challenges of taking care of family and friends and yourselves while striving to keep up with your research and teaching responsibilities, your dissertation and thesis writing, your overall planning of what comes next. I've been to many complications and hooting ceremonies over the years. And I loved the pre-sessional, the music, the regalia, and especially the atmosphere. But this year feels completely different to me. Partly because of the challenges of the previous two years, and partly because in a way I'm graduating to after 37 years, I'll be moving on to my next chapter. And like you, I will take memories from Udi of mentors and colleagues, of late night lab talks and early morning campus walks of too much coffee and not enough time. And especially the privilege of working with friends. I also wondered if I were to ever have a free minute to do what I wanted to do versus what was expected of me. And yet here we all are, each of us poised on the precipice of what comes next? So what will be next for you? Maybe, you know, for sure. Maybe you're still working on it. But whatever the case may be, I hope you will carry with you a college day of mind. Every person on this stage and every mentor and advisor sitting in the audience sitting with you. Now, as you get ready to cross this stage, could share their list of what comprises a college state of mine. Here are a few things from my list. It's a commitment to personal growth and a desire to expand one sphere. It's a mind open to new ideas, new opportunities, and new frontiers. It's a mind that hopes and dreams of a better world. It's a willingness to pursue what matters most, even if it seems impossible. And of course, many people know what I'm going to say next. It's a deep and never ending love of learning. Congratulations and best wishes to each of you. And thank you to your family members and supporters and friends who have helped you along this journey. Also special thanks to the faculty advisors and mentors who have educated you and to the many administrative staff members across campus who've worked with you throughout your time at the University of Delaware and to the Graduate College for organizing this event. That lets us all finally be together again. And it's now my great privilege to introduce Dennis assign as the president of the University of Delaware, did hear a few words and thoughts that around his mind. Congratulations everybody. Good afternoon, everybody. Thank you. Dr. Rossi and Dr. Morgan. Robin, This was just amazing. Please join me in giving her a round of applause for the 37 years of dedicated service. We all all been a great debt of gratitude and it will certainly miss her, but she's not going to go very far. So I'm so happy, so happy that we're all here together today. These are special moments in the life of our campus community. A chance to celebrate our people, our students and our faculty who make the University of Delaware sets a wonderful place. I'm absolutely thrilled that we have so many of your families and friends here to share in this special moment. Let's just give them another round of applause, please. I want to say thank you from my heart to all of you, because your support and encouragement of our doctoral candidates has been absolutely essential to their success. That has been especially true during this unprecedented time, given the challenges that we all had to persevere through the past few years and to our graduating doctoral students today. Let me be among the very first to say, congratulations doctors. Reaching this moment has require that incredible level of perseverance and dedication to your academic and research commitments. And you did it while the world around you, who's changing moment by moment, it goes, got invincible spirit that and your drive to succeed that help you overcome tremendous obstacles. But you've earned this moment and you should be very proud of what you have accomplished. You earn the highest degree awarded in academia, the kind of degree helped by fewer than 2% of American adults. That's pretty amazing. But with great privilege comes great responsibility. Your journey and lifelong service to your societies in the world is just beginning. You're starting a new face of work. One that focuses on the creation of new knowledge to help address that complex problems around us. This is true whether you work in basic or applied research. Whether you work in the arts, the humanities, business, the sciences, where you work in a lab or in the classroom, or the community. Where do you remain in academia or whether you pursue a career in the private or non-profit sectors or government. You are now leaders in the never ending quest to increase human understanding. Your creation of knowledge finds its highest purpose. When it reaches lives, strengthens communities, and it helps us build a better world. As you leave here today and you embark on this new journey. I want you to be guided by the values that you learned at the University of Delaware. Specifically, I want you to remember two things. The part of innovation and the promise of engagement. These are the critical pathways that can lead us into a bright it, a brighter future. Creativity, discovery, and innovation provide the power to drive our society and an economy forward. Our world needs a constant flow of new ideas. New ways of doing things, new ways of looking at things, new solutions to old problems and new questions help illuminate our path to the future. Innovation means new processes, new products, and new services. Consider the challenges our world has faced during this pandemic. Science has helped us understand the emergence and spread of this disease. And science has informed us of the best ways to protect ourselves through our behaviors and the development of safe and effective vaccines. Yet some of the biggest challenges associated with the pandemic had been related to politics and public policy, education and economics, communications and community service. It has taken all those fields and more, all working together to mount an effective response to the global pandemic. This work is far from over, of course, in whatever field of study that you have pursued, you can make incredible contributions by harnessing the transformative power of innovation. As you do so, remember to always be fully engaged with the world. Engagement means that we're going to share our knowledge and applier creativity and civic commitment to the critical challenges facing people in our communities and around the globe. Engagement is a promise we make to others in society that we will listen to them and let their needs and form a research and scholarship. It is also crucial that you engage with each other and celebrate across disciplines and cultures. As smart as you are, and I don't doubt it. You will never have a truly comprehensive picture of a complex problem like climate change or race relationships or a global pandemic. Collaboration sparks inspiration and helps you open new doors of inquiry and understanding. Work together to go far. It's the only way to really make progress that endures and benefits future generations. So always remember the power of innovation and the promise of engagement. If you combine them, you are unstoppable. As you receive your doctoral hoods today and begin this next chapter of your lives. Let those values guide you and your important work. The University of Delaware is very proud of you and your accomplishments. So again, congratulations, doctors. Thank you. Thank you, President, dishonest. We will begin recognising the first cohort of master students earning their degrees from the Graduate College. All four of these students have earned their degrees in data science. And it is my pleasure to introduce Professor Rich Braun, the founding director of the Master and data science program. Dr. Collins, Jackson Horrigan, Dr. Caitlin, kinda like Yo Dr. Alivio, one jury. Tell me to Udi has been a life-changing experience for me. Ud is a great university. I've learned, develop skills, and made friends. Doctor, say I run this. Thank you very much, Dr. Braun. It is now my great pleasure to introduce Associate Dean Mary Martin, who will explain the meaning of the wearing of the hood. The meaning of the wearing of the hood. That edition and meaning of the wearing of the hood is that a candidate for the doctoral degree should not wear the hood of the doctoral degree unless it has been officially draped on the degree candidate by one who holds a doctoral degree. The hoodie is to signify the passage of scholarship from one to another. For those who achieve the highest degree offered by the institution of higher learning. For you, the degree candidates, the doctoral hooting is likely to be a onetime event in your lifetime. We believe that the experience, so this event that recognizes your accomplishment will linger in your memory and the memory of your family as you step off into your future endeavors. Leading the way to prominence as leaders in addressing the grand challenges of our society. The unique academic garb for doctoral degrees includes a gown that has a three doctoral stripes on the sleeve. Each university determines the color of the gown. The academic costume guide and academic costume ceremony guide to which the university follows, indicates that the hood designed is different for each level of a degree. That is a hood for a bachelor's degree and a master's degree is different design and has a different length. The hood for the doctoral degree. The doctoral hood is to be four feet long with panels out the slide. The intercollegiate Code provides that a doctoral hood should be lined with the official colors of the institution, conferring the degree. And the lining is worn exposed. Ud hoods are Royal Blue Velvet on the outside and the inside material is blue and gold are colors. Candidates. And important direction. If a person holds more than one academic degree, as you all do, you may wear only one hood at a time, and it should match the gown. Participation in the doctoral hooting convocation today of firms, your right to where the doctoral hood and the doctoral gown with the three doctoral stripes on the sleeve. President and deans. Let us begin the celebration and we'll begin with the College of a. Thank you, Mary. Good afternoon. I'm Calvin Keeler, and it's my honor and privilege to be the interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Our college is engaged in finding solutions to one of the world's grandest challenges. Feeding the world while protecting the planet and its inhabitants. As we know from the events of the past few years, animals may not only be a source of food, but a vector for human disease. Increased food production is important for an increasing global population. But a must be done while maintaining our stewardship of the environment, our soil, water, and air. As graduate students you have faced and overcome something unique obstacles. You may have had to surmount challenges and obtaining samples and performing your experiments. You've had to learn to interact with your advisors, committee members, and colleagues remotely. The era of the virtual PhD defense has now arrived. And you've done this while worrying about the health and safety of your loved ones and while dealing with unique and challenging personal responsibilities. I join you and thanking the friends, family members, and loved ones who have supported you and stood by your side during your graduate careers. And yet despite these impediments, your education and scholarship continued. In the past year 17 PhD degrees have been earned and our college, and almost half of those degrees have come from the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. So to conclude, I want to add my congratulations to those of the faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to our PhD graduates. I am proud to welcome you to the community of scholars. And I wish you every success as you embark on your personal journeys of scientific discovery, the world is waiting for you and the world needs you. President. A sourness. Good afternoon. I'm Bruce Weber, Dean of the out for Lerner College of Business and Economics. It's my pleasure today to welcome and recognize the students receiving a PhD in either economics, economic education, or financial services analytics from the Lerner College. First, learners, economists who do remarkable research in three counter-intuitive ways. They develop analytic models of consumption and production under resource scarcity. In order to spread abundance. The measure costly transactional frictions and identify market failures in order to raise living standards for all. The derive rigorous insights into how individuals and organizations make critical decisions and their results promote social welfare. The researchers working in financial services analytics identify critical patterns and create big insights from big data. They seek to achieve both predictable accuracy and interpretability and their machine learning algorithms. They use both supervised and unsupervised learning to facilitate deep support for all people through better artificial intelligence methods. Phd graduates, the original scholarship in your dissertation contributes to the disciplines of economics, economic education, and financial services analytics and improves the ways societies manage and use scarce resources. The learner faculty have worked to ensure not only your personal educational progression, but that your research advances your field of study and that you have developed as an independent scholar. Please continue to build on your successes here at UD. My forecast is that your predicted methodologies, parsimonious models, and robust, statistically significant empirical results will improve the functioning of organizations and economies. And they will lift your professional satisfaction as well. With great pleasure, I welcome you to the growing body of learner doctoral alumni. This this doctoral hooting ceremony is always for me one of the highlights of these convocation and commencement celebrations. It recognizes and celebrates the pinnacle, the high points of one's educational achievements. This year, I'm particularly thrilled to be able to have the opportunity to personally congratulate the students of the College of Earth, ocean, and environment who have earned their doctoral degrees. We have students earning degrees in oceanography, ocean engineering, geology, geography, climatology, marine studies, representing the many vital fields and pillars of the College of Earth, ocean, and environment. Our students climb to the top of mountains. Take submarine writes that the bottom of the ocean study the top of the atmosphere. Some of them study the warm tropical waters of coral reefs. Some of them studies the not so warm water around Antarctica. And a lot of them work with and in communities all around the world. It may sound like fun, but it's also a lot of work. Their dedication and the knowledge and research represented by their degree. We'll be true assets to society's understanding of the world, all the world around us and how we interact with it. President, a sadness. I present to you the 2022 candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the College of Earth, ocean, and environment. Congratulations. Dr. saber essence browser. Before I get started in recognizing are absolutely amazing graduates. I'd like to take a moment as the Dean of the College that houses the elementary teacher education program. And reflect with you on the mass shooting at Rob elementary school. And you validate Texas. And remember the lives of those innocent school children and educators who were killed. This horrific incident is a sad reminder of the importance of teachers. In this case. How important those teachers were in saving the lives of many children and how important they are and will be in the coming days, weeks, and yes, even years in helping the children and their families cope with and recover from this terrible act.
