Please join me in welcoming Donna Fontana. Thank you Dean Weber and congratulations class of 2019. Let's give yourselves another hand It's truly a privilege to be here speaking to you. Today. I have developed a little bit of a summer colds so you'll excuse me. If I take a few sips of water during this talk when I told my best friends than I was asked to give this convocation address. She gave me a few pieces of advice. But one of them was that I should think about what I want you to be talking about tonight over dinner with your friends and your family and work backwards from there. So my theme my dinner table theme is that I would like you to talk about striving not just for individual success. But how to be a value value to your community to your friends your family and your co-workers. In doing so the results might just surprised you. Dean Weber gave me 12 minutes. To steer your dinner conversation I'm going to take full advantage by telling you three stories about how being myself being bold and always be willing to learn has impacted my career. Excuse me. Very early and myself career. I was walking down the street in lower Manhattan with a prospect after finishing a breakfast meeting. And I became completely distracted by a delivery truck driver who had opened the door and thrown down a coffee cup paper coffee cup. Now my friends and my family know that I am obsessed with letter. But I didn't know really how to deal with this in a work situation. I was torn between saying something to the driver. But I didn't want to break the conversation with the CEO. Nor did I want him to think I was some kinda not. But in that split second I had to make a decision and I decided to be myself. So I rushed over to that car door. I knocked on it. The driver looked at me rolled down his window. And I said sir I don't know if you realise this. But when you opened your core door that paper coffee cup fell out I don't know if you need it. Would you like me to get it for you or shy dispose of it for you. So without embarrassing the driver I think I've made my point. What happens next what seemed like a very long time went by when he opened his core door got out of the cab got down on the street picked up the coffee cup. Looked at me thanked me and got back in a scar Few if any of you know New York City drivers that kinda went much differently. So I continued my conversation with the CEO and I didn't think much about that incident to a few months later we had won the deal. And my boss said to me on our Monday morning sales call. Hey Fontana. Can you tell us about your coffee cup strategy and I like and then remember what he was talking about and I really didn't know why he knew about this. But what happened was we always do a win-loss review with a third party on any deal. And that particular deal that CEO had said that if I cared as much as about worrying about litter as I did about servicing is that account he knew he was in good hands. So who knew that in a world where it's so hard to sell your service model that Peking picking up a piece of trash was all it took. I wish I had kept that coffee cup instead of making that drive our dispose of it. Next time story too. I was commuting to work one day when I saw a sign for a recycling in the workplace seminar offered by New York City. Alright sewing. Now I know you guys are thinking does this woman do anything with financial services but I decided to attend the seminar. And I got very inspired. And I thought I think my company can do something more than what we're doing. So I wrote I drafted a letter to the president of the Wall Street firm I worked for. And I went on and on about recycling and what it does for the economy and the trees that saves in the water and the tax burden it it reduces and the dependency on foreign fuels and I I just went all out. And this was years before. Anyone use the term climate change regularly. And I was very inspired that I thought we could become this financial services firm that was socially responsible and cost effective at the same time. But I was about seven years into my career and I was hoping that I was going to have a long career on Wall Street. So before I sent the ladder I talked to my mentor. And he agreed with the content of the letter but he did tell me that the letter sending the letter had some risks and I should be aware of them. For example we had just come through the financial crisis of 1989 with the savings alone. And the company had a lot more things to worry about them potentially double-sided statements And he wondered if I understood that by sending such a ladder that I would be construed as maybe too I had idealistic and not really not really responsible. And in what my job requirements were because this really had nothing to do with my job. But I listen to his concerns and suggestions and I decided it was worth sending the latter. I was willing to take that responsibility. So I sent the letter. And I waited. And I waited. And I waited for our response. I was called back in to my mentors office. And he told me that the senior management team had read the letter. And I got a little excited. He said they really didn't really talk about the topic very much. They just talked about me. And then I start to get a low pal. And he saw this and he said but don't worry don't worry. They have a very big project coming up a really new initiative. And they'd like you to join that team. And so at 20 years old I started meeting monthly with all the presidents of the divisions of the firm and all the heads of the divisions. And those contexts stayed with me throughout my entire Wall Street career. So you just never know about standing up for something that you think is a great idea where it might lead Joe. Third story. Ten years ago I went to the screening of the movie Waiting for Superman. The documentary. It talked about the challenges of inner city education. I left that viewing saying I need to do something about inner city education. Now I wasn't an educator and there wasn't a teacher. But I still was convinced I could do something. So the first thing I did was Phone a friend. I convinced my friend from business school that we should take the curriculum that Mike company had created to teach financial literacy and begin teaching that to sixth graders in East Harlem. So with our business suits on our bags full of curriculum double-sided we took the subway up to a 116th Street every Tuesday afternoon. The students that we taught were an Extended Learning Day program. So they started school at age 40 and went till six every day weeks. And we showed up at 430 to seach them financial literacy. Initially we expected them to be so excited to see us. And hang on every word. But we quickly learned that after a full day of school for these students they retired. There are restless We're anxious and they were overwhelmed. So our first classes were not what I would consider success. But with the help of our amazing consulted of teacher we learned classroom management techniques to keep their attention. We engaged in active listening. We ensure that everyone participated. We rewarded the right behaviors. And we made sure that everyone's ideas were acknowledged. And these techniques really worked. We began really enjoying teaching the class. And more importantly our students appreciate the lessons and they really shine that the semester ending presentations. Okay fast forward to the past year. I was assigned to lead a sales team to secure the business of a very large prestigious New boutique firm. It was building up to be the biggest deal of my career. And potentially one of the largest for my firm. It had the full attention of management. And so there was no chance to get this wrong to secure the deal. It required me to spend extents of time in a conference room with about 30 folks from both the prospect and my product operations technology teams. We spent days negotiating the services and technology that they would need for us to secure the deal. After being on my feet all day facilitating these meetings I was exhausted. Then I would have to recap reposition and prepare for the next meeting. Notice the team members were tired restless overworked. And overwhelms who I've been in this classroom. I mean this conference room before to keep their attention. I use all the skills that I learned teaching sixth graders active listening rewarding the right behavior. I led that team to one of the largest and most prestigious deals in the history of our firm. The skills I learned teaching financial literacy to sixth graders. Helps lead my sales team to victory. C is simply never know where your interests might take you. And the skills you'll pick up along the way. That was the end of that story. So now the big finale I do want you to consider that graduating with a learner business disagree from the University of Delaware is a great privilege. A privilege that will give you the flexibility and resources Consider how to strive not just for individual success. But to how to beat a value right up front I want to acknowledge that some of you may not have the time to do community service but most of you will. And I do hope that you will intertwine community service in your life as you embark on your career. What I learned and what I hope you will discuss over dinner is being of value can take so many different shapes. For me it took the shape of a discarded paper coffee cup. A letter about recycling and a room full of antsy sixth graders. Can you only imagine what it might look like for you since I'm just returning from biking the Camino in Portugal I will end with what is said to all pilgrims wanting counters along the route. Bone Camino. Good road ahead. Thank you for your attention. It's been a privilege. Heartfelt congratulations and enjoy your dinner conversation Thank you very much Donna. Thank him. The second Anthony grew up in Middletown and Wilmington Delaware and attended Sanford School where he was an honor roll student a two-time. All state point guard. The lead the basketball team to to Delaware State Championships. It was his dream to come to the University of Delaware and play varsity basketball. And his four years a UD Anthony whose nickname is Champ. Exemplified the learner can-do attitude being a learner being a leader on and off the court his peers teachers and coaches describe him as a dedicated student and a first-class hardworking and selfless team player he earned for varsity letters played for the blue hens in a 121 basketball games starting in 87 of them and scored 991 points. He was one of the best all around guards in the ca his senior year. Anthony is now a financial consultant with Mass Mutual Financial Group and we'll welcome our graduates as our newest alumni. Anthony Thank you Dean Weber. First of all I want to start by saying for one blue head to another. Congratulations. Today you're ordering a group of over 250 thousand UD alum and more than 30 thousand learner college graduates. You are also entering into a new relationship with the university a lifelong relationship versus the four or five or six or whatever years theorem relationship you open it up to this point I love you the and I'm excited to be back in the Bob. I was in your exact same Sea last year sad to be leaving but happy to have found an exciting opportunity working for mass each row Financial Group and Newcastle Delaware. A 2006 graduate of University of University of Delaware Christopher Mecca hire me and continues to mentor me to this day. Maintaining connections is important for universities our alumni as well as the students. Like Chris has done for 15 years I come back to university regularly to attend events and advise students for careers or financial planning. To meet with student athletes to be a fan of football and basketball game with other fellow graduates. Well I was to talk to faculty members. I hope that you will be joining me and continuing our relationship with the University. My colleagues and mentors Chris Mack serves on a learner Advisory Board for financial planning major and I plan to do so in the future to several opportunities to support the learners students and programs in the future. As a freshman I joined UT basketball team that was full of pride from when they see a championship and going to that SEWA tournament although we were not able to repeat that success I worked hard and we compete as a team and every single season we were there. And through those challenges we built strong relationships with my fellow peers and coaches. Now why do I want to have a relationship with the University of Delaware you may not realize it now. But your years at University of Delaware shaved our entire life the university delaware taught us how to solve problems and think critically. It provide us the skills necessary for Lifetime success. We establish lifelong friendships Shang heartbreaks as well as Joyce. These lights shift will continue to grow and strengthen as you go on our personal careers. Right now today you're glad to be graduating and moving on. Your prayers are certainly glad you're gathering and moving on as well. However tomorrow you will look back and realize how great of an experience this really was. Keep that feeling alive get involved and stay connected as a UD alone. Join the Alumni Association follow you the connections online. Stan taught using histogram length then Twitter Facebook come back for alumni weekend almost 4 thousand graduates will be back on campus. Next week. Also attend homecoming. Continued to contribute continue to contribute any university I've done. So up to this point we are unloading university needs to support and contributions as a move forward on this path to prominence. Although we paid a lot of tuition along the way we also know that the tuition alone does not cover the cost of our education. The ongoing enhancement of Yiddish reputation only lift the value of our degrees. And there's also a good chance that your challenge and what your children will end up here as well. The rubber recently share me that former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has given a total of almost $2 billion to John Hopkins University where we may not be able to give like Michael Bloomberg I mean in reality who can well we can start with $5. The US dollar will be just as important to our lives tomorrow as as as band for the past four years of our lives Congratulations again you've done it you have done a great job and hopefully you've had a little bit of fun one-way. Thank you. Thank you very much Anthony. As we close our ceremony I would like our graduates to remember that it's talent and capable as you are and I observed firsthand that progress over your four or more years here. You could not have done all this without the support of your families and your friends I'm looking up into the stands now.
