Please join me in welcoming Donna Fontana Thank you Dean Weber. It's really a privilege to be here today. But before I get started let's give let's give you guys a hand. Go blue. I've developed a little bit of a summer cold. So if I have to take a little sip water I'm assuming you'll understand. When I told my best friend that Dean Weber had told asked me to give this convocation address. She quickly said Okay here's what you have to do. Think about what I want you and your families to be talking about over dinner tonight And work backwards from there. So the theme I would like you to consider pitcher over your meal tonight is strive not for your individual success. But strive to be a value be of value to your community to your friends your family to your coworkers. Dean Weber has given me 12 minutes to steer that conversation. So I'm going to take full advantage and tell you three stories about how being myself being bold and always be willing to learn impacted my career. And I'm hoping everyone can hear me right now. Yes. Okay. So very early on myself career I was walking down a street in lower Manhattan after a breakfast meeting. And I became distracted because I saw a truck driver openness car door and drop a paper coffee cup onto the street. Now my friends and family know that I do not like littering but I didn't know what to do in a work situation. I was having a conversation with a CEO of a firm and I didn't want him to think I was some kind of nut. I wanted to keep the dialogue going. But in that split second I had to be myself. So I rushed over to the car. I knocked on the window. The driver roll the window down. And I said sir I don't know if you realize this. But when you opened your core door a paper coffee cup fell onto the floor. Would you like me to get it for you well that was a long silence. And I didn't know what was gonna happen next. He rolled opens his core door. He got out of the car. He picked up the coffee cup. And he thanked me. And if you know New York City drivers you can imagine it could've ended very differently. I had a laugh with that CEO and we continue to dialogue. And I ended up winning that deal. I didn't think much more about that incident until one morning on our Monday morning sales call. My boss said donna do you mind telling everyone your coffee cup strategy and I I had to think for a minute. How did he find out about this but what I realized was we do a win-loss review forever new deal. And that prospect had brought up the coffee cup story. So this third-party firm and said if Donna felt that strongly about Littering we know it's in our DNA to feel that strongly about servicing our account. So who knew than in a world that's so hard to sell your service strategy. That all it took was picking up a piece of trash. And I wish I had kept that coffee cup instead of having that driver throw it away. Snail want to recycling must think does this woman work in financial services I've always been a fan of recycling since my third grade teacher Mrs. Green taught us about it. And so commuting on the subway one morning. When I saw an ad for a free seminar that New York City was offering on how to recycle in the workplace. I decided to attend. Afterwards I got so pumped up about all the opportunities to recycle that I decided to write a letter to the then president of the major Wall Street firm I worked for. And I went on and on about recycling and how it saves trees and energy. And reduces the tax burden of collecting garbage. You have to understand this is years before the term climate change was widely used. And I talked about printing on two sides of the paper. And using closing the loop and using recycled paper across our organization. Now I was very excited and I close the letter with how we could be the four Runner in the financial services world. Being both cost-effective and socially conscious. But I was only seven years into what I hoped would be a long career on Wall Street. So before I sent the letter I talked to my mentor about it. And he said there were a lot of risks and sending such a letter. We had just come through the savings and loan crisis of 1989. And the firm seemingly had more important things to worry about than a few trees. And he asked me do you sure you want to be known as that person that's bothering the President. Do you sure you don't want to be considered too idealistic and not really focused on what your job is because this had nothing to do with what I did for the firm. And I decided to be bold and to send the letter and the consequences because I felt really strongly about it. So simple ladder and I waited and waited. And I waited. And I got called back in to my mentors office. And he said the letter had been brought up at the very senior levels of the management team. And they really didn't talk about recycling they had talked about me. This is when I went a little pal and he must have noticed it He quickly said but don't worry. They're starting a new initiative. And this is in 1992. And I became the youngest member of the first Diversity Council on Wall Street. And I rubbed elbows every month with all the presidents of the various divisions and the heads of all the business units. And that Rolodex that I created because I was so passionate about recycling helped me throughout my wrote Wall Street career. You never know what's going to get to notice. Okay one last story. A few years ago I went to see the movie Waiting for Superman. A documentary about the challenges inherent in our public education system. And I left that movie thinking we must fixed inner city education. Now I wasn't an education major and it wasn't a teacher. But I thought there's still something I can do. So first thing I did was Phone a friend and I convinced my business school friend to teach a curriculum that fidelity and put together on financial literacy. And we would teach this every Tuesday afternoon in East Harlem to a group of sixth graders. Now this particular school the students went on an Extended Learning Day so they went to school from 840 to six o'clock at night. We would get on the subway and our business suits and our curriculum. Double-sided and arrive at the school about 430. And we thought these students are gonna be so excited to hear from us. Well they were. It wasn't a success story. Our first few classes. They were tired and restless and anxious and overwhelmed. I was tired after standing on my feet during the class full. And then we would have to recap and reposition and prepare for the next week's class and it was exhausting. But we had the help of a very great teacher who taught us all kinds of classroom management techniques to keep their attention we engaged in active listening. We ensure that everyone was engaged. We made sure that everyone was heard and all their ideas were acknowledged. And the techniques really started to work Students enjoying the class. They shined at the end of the semester presentations and we were really enjoying ourselves. Okay why the story fast-forward a year ago I was assigned to lead a sales team to secure the business of a very large prestigious boutique firm. It was building up to be the biggest deal of my career. And potentially one of the largest for our firm. And it had the full attention of all the senior managers to secure the deal it required me to lead extense of full one day workshops with the prospect and our tech product and ops teams. We'd spent days in conference rooms negotiating the technology and services that would be required to win the deal. After being on my feet all day. I was tired but I still would have to recap reposition and prepare for the next meeting. I noticed the team members were tired restless overworked. And overwhelms who I've been in this classroom I mean conference room before. So we used all the same techniques that we used on the sixth graders. And that worked I led that team to land the largest and most prestigious deal for our firm. Thus the skills I learned teaching financial literacy to a roomful of sixth graders helped me lead myself team to victory. See a simple way never know where your interests will take you and where are the skills you'll pick up along the process. Alright so there's three stories one more sip of water. And here's the grand finale. So I do want you to consider that graduating with a learner business degree from the University of Delaware is a privilege. A privilege that will give you the flexibility and the resources to consider how to strive not just for your individual success. But to strive to be a value. You may not have the time to do community service Most of you will and I do hope that you will intertwine that in your life as you embark on your career what I learned and what I hope you will discuss over dinner is being a value can take so many different shapes. For me it took the shape of a discarded paper coffee cup a letter about recycling and a room full of ansi sixth graders. Can you imagine what it might look like for you since I'm returning from biking the Camino in Portugal I will ends what was said to all pilgrims One encounters along the route bone Camino. Thank you for your attention. A heartfelt congratulations and enjoy your dinner. Thank you so much Donna terrific to hear from you and welcome back to campus. You have worked hard to earn your degree at the University of Delaware and you should be proud of yourself and your fellow classmates. As you take this next step in your lives. Please let me remind you. You're not alone. You join more than 275 thousand blue ends and more than 35 thousand learners school lumps. I remember when I was sitting in that seat and I graduated I was excited nervous ambitious 11 I felt as though I wanted to stay connected to the university for comfort as they navigated the new world that was about to enter. When I graduated to stay connected with alumni. I started with coming to homecoming every year and go into the Nova restaurant Gobi to nova. God I love hospitality. A few years later I began to speak as a guest speaker in various classes. These experience through the UD community gave me the comfort I had been looking for. There are other ways you can connect with stay connected with the university. I grew up in New Jersey go jersey. Exit. 135 if you're from Jersey you get that Joe. So in New Jersey your license plate you have a front and a back at least he did when I lived there. And when I moved to Pennsylvania after school you only need one license plate was in the back. So I decided that on the front of my car I'd put a UTI play. I just had blue hen pride. But what I realized was that I can travel almost anywhere in the country. And somebody will start a conversation with me about that license plate. It just seems like there are blue hands everywhere. As you as you move forward I would ask you to join me in doing two things. Staying informed about UD and remaining involved. Let me break down both of those. There's so many ways to stay in foreign once you walk out these doors to that you can read the UD magazine. You can like the UD and learn at Facebook pages. If you haven't already done it you can connect with UD and learner through Twitter LinkedIn Instagram and whatever the next social media crazes. In terms of remaining involved you have a couple of choices You could speak at a class as I do. You could attain alumni weekend. You can attend Alumni events in the various cities across the country. You can attend homecoming. You can also recruit students from Udi. And lastly you can contribute to uj to a cause that interests. You could start with a 1.100 whatever you're comfortable with by doing one many or all of these things you will continue to have the spirit of blue hands in your life. Staying connected with UD can help you both professionally as you advance in your career and personally by meeting new friends no matter where you live I stand before all of you I am proud of what you've all accomplished. Go out into the world and make your fellow Blue and sprout. Thank you. Thank you. David. As we close our ceremony I'd like our graduates to remember that is talented and capable as you are. And I observe this progress firsthand over the four or five years you're with us Could not have done this all without the help and support of your families and your friends I'd like the parents of our graduates in the stands today to please stand and remain standing. Could the grandparents that are here join them. Could the odds and the uncles and the relatives of our graduates also stand. Graduates look in the direction of your family and thank them. They were behind you for these years at the University of Delaware and there'll be behind you forever. Thank you very much parents and families. You can please be seated.
