Everyone, welcome to class. Today, we're going to go over the causes of the French Revolution. So first off the bat, I want everyone today. Sheet of paper is in your people click on your table. Once I take 30 s and write everything, everything you know about the French Revolution, you want me to jump from steam? Pencil a little deeper. All right, so what are some of the things you guys said that yes. Perfect. Of course, because we know that that's where I didn't Napoleon. Yes. Declaration of rights. Okay. All right. One more here. Perfect. All right. So one of the most common things is this lovely lady right here. Does anyone ever, this is Antoinette and her famous saying, let them eat cake, which is actually been back, a really common misconception. She never actually said this. But it's become a staple of French Revolution. Alright, so in this lecture about the five W's, the French Revolution, which is who, remember the three Cs, which is the three major classes of furnace at the time when it started in 17, 89, which was right after the revolution, which will be relevant later. So I would take where it's in France, we're going to talk mostly about this and he's like tourists. But it also happened in the countryside at a time of political activism In France. And then y, we're going to discuss the four main causes, which are these four, which we're going to do in this order. Forming causes our system popular discontent. People, the Enlightenment and the absolute hallmark. And then to close everything up and you're talking about 3D, clean everything up. In the old order. This is the class system which is called the three estates. At the very top we have the Monarch, which is not technically part of any estate. He has all power in the very tippy top of this triangle, we have the clergy. The first mistake, they make up, what's the function of the population? Next we have the nobility, which is the second essay, which is made up of 2% of the population. Then later it, which makes up a whopping 97% of the population, is the Third Estate, which is has fixed income tax. As you can probably tell, neither the other two estates have six of them, which means that they are exempt from tax at the time. So the first sustain the clergy of the Roman Catholic Church against France. What is a pension? Is less than 1% of population, but they own 20% of the most fertile land. And when the people Thursday as every power at the time decline during the Enlightenment and new ideas. So they were not as powerful at the time he started the revolution, but they're still exempt from taxation. The Second Estate was the French nobility, and they afford to general population. They held the highest offices. And they were able to tax it Thursdays for their own profit of work into Louis the 16th monarch, the Third Estate who had commerce, the bourgeoisie, urban, lower-class artisans. If you guys don't know what all those words mean, the bourgeoisie is essentially the upper-class or below class would be, say, these commoners would be lower-class. And artisans were craftspeople. So this was a wide ranging variety of people or a lot of different walks of life. All weekend is massive population. This group was highly taxed and they had no power or influence with government. Unlike the other two estates. They embrace new enlightenment ideas that came in talking about freedom and liberty. So our first interrupt up to me, we're going to talk about this quote from which is from the three estates. Writing about the place of the three social for the vote is What is the Third Estate? Everything. What hasn't been until now, we were nothing. And what does it talk to me? So I'm going to give you guys 1 min in your groups for a round robin. And we're going to talk about the third estate in France based on this description. So if someone to start and then you get a secretary in the government, like most everybody else, except my wife. Alright, guys are wrapping up your own person. For people. I was basically saying like, they are nothing to, nobody wants to be more on Thursday. So Thursday. Hello, class than 97% has been taken advantage of for many, many years and it's about time that they had power with this statement, Ben jobs, it's about time that they had their own goals instead of just being told already several times in which that last year because I'm handing power. We just said even though there are large majority of the population, even though they're just one-third of mistakes. So pretty much the same bunch. Large close up of the population that overly represented. Sounds good. Alright. So not too popular discontent. Three major reasons as to why that Thursday is a subset of the time. First one was that there was a major branch shortage in good times where we talked about how a person's wages, but due to bad harvest, by weather and mismanagement, the price of bread skyrocketed and people are starting to start. Taxation. A high national death due to multiple wars that France was in Charlotte spending as monarchy. So there are many texts and it's incurred on the Thursday, which included the time, which was the land tax that went to the nobility. Tie that we can have church tax to the clergy, as well as various other toxins that would go to monitor. And thirdly, the lack of representation within 16 had a carte Blanche. There's what we call agreeing to whatever you wanted, which meant that the people had no say on the taxation that they were incurring, as well as the management of bread. So these three reasons that there's a status. The third space is content. What do you think is most important here as 20 s? And think about that. Just think to yourself. Well, I think the lack representation is important because you have justice of taxation. You have the people who have a voice of justice. Perspective away. During a physical exam. Very willing to do things. Just as a comprehension check for this presentation. Why might say it's vehicles to change? And conversely, why might the Thursday promote change? Not all of them are based model. All right, So conclusion that you came as to why? Because they might want change and the person is I can say it's my mom. He said like they have like money and they don't see you on the next station. I don't really care because the difference between the first and second stage, wanting power for themselves or thirsty, needs the power to basically remain still. To have that people will remain. At some point, there's change. And the first excited state, we have to pay taxes are they doing? And I don't want to do. Alright, so another one of the key important factors why the French Revolution happened was enlightenment ideals. Ideals. So the enlightenment ideals were basically a concept that value happiness, knowledge, and all these view factors that we all think is great now. But they didn't know about these back then and they didn't experience. It was very influenced by the American Revolution, along with increased criticism of the government, especially as monarch. And so we have a bunch of ideas, like someone said, the Declaration of Rights of Man, where all these lovely people, all of those ideas went into. So first we have the social contract theory. And social contract theory is basically saying that people should be able to elect their molars and they should be able to get rid of those rulers associative. So the division of liberty, which is the government, should be split into executive, legislative and judicial branches. Have life, liberty and property, which is basically saying that everyone should have the right to their life, their liberty, and their own property. The reason we're just saying that everything should be subject to reason, and that includes the people, political and religious actors. We have the ideas of liberty, which come from the American Revolution is because when the French came to go help America during their revolution, the French soldiers got word of these new alignment ideas that Americans already had. And they wanted that to, they were jealous. They really sound like great ideas. So now I have a question. Which one of these do you think, besides the ideas of liberty, would be most likely come from America? Amongst yourself. Why figured out as well? Yes. Exactly. Anything else? Fission power. One of the first see a lot of these were our lead America. So the American Revolution happened and they experience all these. The French wanted that. So many of the absolute monarchy. And so this here is Louis the 16th. He was the king during the time. Like we talked about before, he was an absolute monarch, which means that it was a typo government or society is being ruled by glycol and powerful. So he could do whatever you wanted. On a Thursday, was not unhappy about this because all of his choices eventually came back to them. They have no say in how their government was to run. So we have 16 and re-enter that they were married during this time. Louis the 16th, once you are now prepared to be che, he was incompetent and we'd get a lot of his choices towards him. Members of the clergy that also did not have a lot of intelligence on this matter. And so he had a lot of expansion of funds. During the American Revolution. He spent a lot of money. So there were a lot of debt. And then there was also struck him along together States spends a lot of money. They love to live big and large. I mean, who doesn't? But it was coming back to the Third Estate because the way he was able to pay for all of that was taxing the escape, which means that instead of paying for their food, they were having to pay for his family. Like that. Marie Antoinette, the French, had many issues with her. One being that she was Austria. They did not like they had a so-called foreigner running their governments. And she also had a big gambling problem. She was made Madame Deficit by French people because she would go and gamble all the French and money away. And then there'd be nothing else so that they couldn't even afford to eat bread. So how do you think enlightenment ideals, absolute monarchy help shape the revolution? 1 min. All right, guys, so they wanted to know whether or not they had no representation. All right, so what are some ideas? Now, do you think that might yield alone oxymyoglobin Paul shaped revolution. We talked about how the French people were seeing the ideas that were coming from the American Revolution and seeing how it was working for them. And then they also have the frustration of the monarchs were spending their money. So there was a fire for the revolution. Exactly. Exactly. They were jealous. They saw that they could do, and when they couldn't have, they wanted that. Anyone from vacuum. Separating powers experience. When you just have one person making all the decisions. And we don't like their decisions and there's nothing you can do to stop. People are happy about that. All right, Anyone else? All more? So from here, I deal in America that is accessible revolution. Exactly. Alright, so as a group, we're going to have you guys create a small mind-map of your table. So in the center where you pulled up the ATPs are going to seem that includes the major causes that we discussed as well as the major players. So this would be like French shortage and I heard this financial crisis is that taxation as well as just the overall result, is finding a little example that we came up with. If you can include any sort of like examples. We just want to see what you got back to the directions. And we will start a 7 min for you guys to make that less than one. All right. Welcome to the right words each other. If you did not change. Okay. Let's take a small portion here is to find so maybe your time I realize if you've got any more detail or any conducting words, exhibit well done. My husband. Does that mean let me write that. Oh, yeah. I know. Everybody doesn't help. I just really like less than a minute left. So wrap up what we already do. Other things. Really. You just need to possibly help you. Yes. So like she said, use your mind-map. Now, individually. We want you to imagine you're living in France right before the start of the French Revolution. You're upset. You're angry because everything we've talked about is happening to you. What you write a letter to indicate a dressing, your concerns, and why. You've been decided. This is funny or formal, whatever you like. Be sure to include why you want to join the revolution, what you would like to achieve each NY and one idea on how you think you would go about this. So this is yes. This individual, you didn't turn around. You're not sheet of paper that you did your lawn and garden right on there. You guys 5 min. So go ahead. For time purposes, you don't have to include every single reason, but try to include at least two of the things we discussed. You've got the time. Are you guys about halfway for your time? 1 min left. Start to wrap up. Your lovely. Alright. So does anyone want to share? You take a moment here to have a good one. Go ahead. Louis, the 16th, you are the worst. In Kotlin says limited resolution to finally get the representation for the Americans. They're having fantastic sounds. They are life, liberty and property. And I want to have those things for myself and have a little bit of say in what goes on in this country. But then she would give them to the radius. Here has got a great definitely will backfire on you and Louis. You stole my money in Britain for nothing malicious. Go onto somebody else's pockets now my rolling AND gate and I can put food on the table. I need a tax return ISA, months worth of the bank branch. You can find you dead. He's pitchforks and torches. Time. We got time like 11. They call it revolution. They sent that in America. They aren't stored in my dad's dollar crazy. I only dropped it in deficit. She running a little money. We have a loop around that theme that you couldn't and shouldn't do this by drawing here with adultery and behavior. Better one than to watch your back or Bob isn't right? And then to wrap everything up, we are going to have you guys talked about two questions. What do you think is the most important? Do you think causes are good reason for a reason? Alright, so what do you guys, the first question, what do you think is the most important cause? I simply wanted to container ships and planes the last button one time and it can fall apart as they can. I was going to say there's not too much that I can say that hasn't already been said. Alright, How long have you lived in the next question, do you think that these reasons for revolution? Absolutely. Right? I think so because the representation anyway, so nothing can be done if they do something. Yeah, the British Raj, Chetty can live like it's the majority of your countries. I'm happy like they should be allowed to overthrow you and gain their own representation in that social contract. Which is what 1 ft in mind. That people should be the ones to go from cholesterol out. Someone say yes and no. I only say no because I mean, revolution has quite a mixed bag in terms of success in history. I mean, sure, it can be nice to be thinking, Oh yeah, when everything's bad, we just got to completely get rid of the current system, start from the ground up. But sometimes, I'm sure that's totally correct. However, the French Revolution seemed like it was kind of a mixed bag because, I mean, they started out trying to get democracy, but they ended with a dictatorship with the pulley literally wanted to be emperor of France. So I mean, I guess, like good intentions don't always lead to good results. So that's why I'm saying it is justified number of pollution and arguably also it's not just given how things turn out went up because it is important that evolution isn't just a good idea does come with shed and spoiler for the future of the French Revolution. They end up with a monarch began and ended up not always best results, but sometimes things. Thank you guys so much for helping out a homeless. You have anymore questions before we're done. All right. Thank you so much. Your name, and then put them in your phone. Thank you. Monday lesson, I'm going to ask you to provide feedback to the group so you can keep your fall. Everyone to do that.
