This session is a workshop for those interested in designing alternatives to exams. Participants will (a) learn about the benefits of authentic assessments, (b) locate sites within their own courses for designing alternatives to exams, and (c) sketch a practical exam alternative using authentic assessment. The session will also address common concerns with the adoption of alternatives to exams and tests related to factors like class size, grading support, and course level. Participants are encouraged to bring a syllabus for a course they teach which includes exams or tests, so that they can discuss course-specific alternative assessments during the interactive portions of the session.
